NEW WORK...

I thought it'd be cool to ring in the 2010 Spring season by taking some photos inspired by my favorite
Sanrio character, My Melody. Making her huge bunny-eared helmet was a serious undertaking.
I'd love to thank my model & sister for sporting the vinyl headdress and giving the
photos their sublimely funny air.

My Aunt requested that I make her a painting featuring each of her kids along with other images representing their interests. Besides these few rules, I had complete artistic freedom for this somewhat abstract family portrait.

Small Plush Installation...

This pieces was featured at Gallery Nucleus' Zombies In Love Show, which was held in the early part of February 2010.

Music has always been a big part of my work and it just so happened when Nucleus asked me to participate in the show, a friend had just given me a copy of Iggy Pop's 1982 album, Zombie Birdhouse. For a couple of weeks, I sat there, pondering on what to make for the show, while the record blasted in the background. I was utterly stumped because my work doesn't usually enter the realm of gore and guts-I'm just way too squeamish! But as I slowly learned Iggy's lyrics, I let the kooky yet dark undertones of the music inspire my small installation.

It's healthy to allow yourself and your work to enter new territory. My favorite tunes always make this transition especially smooth for me. Every piece marks a special time and album in my life.

ON-GOING SERIES...

Misfits & Tablecloths: Pop Tapestries

In the past, rarely did my home dictate what my work would look like. Yet, when I started my plans for a new series of paintings, I did just that- I looked around my tiny dwelling and said, "I gotta make paintings that'll fit in here." Instead of opting for smaller panels, I decided on using a surface that was malleable.

Sewing a tablecloth for each painting was an obvious decision for many reasons: 1. I could finally use much of the idle fabric that had been taking up room in my workspace, 2. Fun prints in the tablecloths would add a graphic bonus & 3. I wanted to finally work on a series that was heavily influenced by the 1990s concert posters of Kozik. I've always been such a huge fan of his use of color and seemingly  random subject matter. I guess you could say this series is in part, a small to homage to one of my heroes.

Random Paintings & Artwork
These pieces I've made on a whim. I get impatient and just start painting on
random surfaces. There's a lil blurb about each image

Beef & Toys, 2009
Acrylic on Found Tabletop
29-3/4 x 17-3/4 inches

This is a portrait/coat of arms for my husband. I painted it as a birthday gift. I joked with him that all he needed to get by are beef and toys. If you knew him, you'd know how true that is.

A Few More Thoughts on Nancy Drew...

This was my first serious series of paintings. (I guess that's why it took me the better part of 3 years to complete!) In this series I was interested in exploring the idea of gender construction through the mixture of television and film imagery with different drawing and painting techniques. Altogether, I was trying to illustrate how beautifully complicated our feminine and/or masculine personas can be. All pieces are approximately 4x4ft in size and are acrylic on panel.
